Manuscript has been accepted by the National High School Journal of Science, 2020
ABSTRACT
In 1928, the discovery of penicillin revolutionized the field of medicine. As the first reported β-lactam antibiotic, penicillin laid the foundation for modern antibiotics. β-lactams, 4-membered cyclic amides, can be used for the prevention and treatment of bacterial infections. Since the discovery of penicillin, many β-lactams have been discovered from natural sources, and modern methodologies in chemical synthesis have powered the design for synthetic β-lactams. This is significant in supplying the continued need for novel antibiotics in the treatment of antibiotic resistant bacteria. [Full Article Link]
