FOREIGN LANGUAGE
MANDARIN
-
Native Speaker Level
I've learned Mandarin since I was 2 years old and am fluent in listening, reading, writing, and speaking. I have been deeply immersed in Chinese history and culture, having lived in Xi'an, China for 2 years, and studied famous literature including ancient Chinese prose and Classical Novels such as Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Journey to the West, and Outlaws of the Marsh. Beginning in 2013, I am a contributing author in the World Journal, the largest Chinese language newspaper in the US. I frequently practice Mandarin with my family, especially my grandparents from China. Recently I have been preparing for the launch of my YouTube channel "Past, Present, Future" with the intention to raise awareness amongst Asian communities of historical racism in America by contributing holistic evidence quantifying and tracing the lasting socioeconomic impacts of slavery and antiblackness. I have been translating all the subtitles into Chinese by myself.
SPANISH
-
Proficient
I learned Spanish starting in 7th grade and am an independent user with regards to listening, reading, writing, and speaking. I have read Spanish books such as La Casa de Mango Street and gave a TED-talk style presentation during my sophomore year. When traveling to Peru for the Pan Am Junior Badminton Championships in 2016 summer, I tangibly experienced aspects of Spanish culture for the first time. Now I'm learning Spanish at the AP level to gain insight into the sociolinguistics of Spanish for fun.
